Hon Secretary's Newsletter January 2013

31 January 2013

Dear Fellow Member

A belated Happy New Year to all fellow members and may 2013 bring you good health and happiness.

Our thoughts over the festive season often turn to those less fortunate than ourselves and 2012 has been a positive and heart-warming year for several recipients of powered wheelchairs. The lives of Mrs Marilyn Peebles (St Andrews), Mr Anthony Shaw (Dalgety Bay, Fife), Mr Chris Cloke (Buckinghamshire), Mr Graham Kennedy (Pittenweem, Fife) and Mr James Gray (St Andrews) have been transformed for the better thanks to the gift of powered mobility. One cannot underestimate the effect on families when their loved ones are gifted with the feeling of free movement and independence.

This ‘gift’ has come about as a result of the financial support and donations from our members, our supporters and generous sponsors – on behalf of the recipients, may I pass on their appreciative and grateful thanks.

Sadly, some of the recipients do not always get as much use from their wheelchairs as they envisaged due to failing health. The pwc recipients and their families are now advised that the pwcs belong to KOTG, with regular servicing and upkeep managed through Keepers. When the chairs are no longer required, they are returned for refurbishment and re-presentation to another recipient.

2013 Fixtures
These annual golf events are an important part of our international golfing fellowship ‘to promote the game of golf’. Please accept this as an open invitation to all members, nominated guests, Friends, supporters and sponsors to join us for either or both of the fixtures below:

Spring Meeting – Friday 12 April – Jubilee Course – 12.00 to 12.40 hrs
Grand Challenge Match – Friday 6 September – Jubilee Course – 12.00 to 12.40 hrs

Please put these dates in your diary and let me know if you hope and/or intend to play in either of the above events. An entry form will also be circulated nearer the time. The green fees for these fixtures will be kept to a minimum with the help of our local members who can utilise some of their ‘guest points’ on the Links. The golf is always followed by the prize-giving and supper in the St Andrews Golf Club, to which all playing and non-playing members and guests are duly invited. We look forward to seeing as many members and guests as possible participating in these golf fixtures.

New Members
We welcomed several new members during 2012: LM 116 – Bill Dunlap from Dallas, Texas, LM 117 – Eric Brown from St Andrews, LM 118 – Nick Hyde from London and LM 119 – Michael Palmore from Richmond, Virginia.

Email contact details
I would like to have the opportunity to remain in regular contact with all members. The easiest and most cost-effective method of achieving this is to circulate information by email. If you have received this letter by post and you have an email address that will enable me to maintain closer contact with you, please contact me at secretary@keepersofthegreen.org. While seeking to fulfil my remit to communicate with all members, this can be made easier and less expensive if achieved by email.

Website www.keepersofthegreen.org
The website remains an active tool for information for members and it relies on your input to ensure that it remains informative and responsive to your requirements. Your comments and contributions are always welcome.

Wheelchair Presentation
The main focus for wheelchair presentations in 2013 will be at the Open Championship at Muirfield on Wednesday 17 July, with the kind permission of The R&A. We hope to be able to assist several individuals from the East Lothian / Edinburgh area and further details of this presentation will be circulated nearer the time.

2012 Affiliation
At this point, may I thank those members who generously donated an additional sum to Keepers when paying their annual affiliation fees. In 2012 a total of £785 was paid in to the Foundation account which will benefit a future wheelchair recipient.

2013 Affiliation
The affiliation fee for 2013 is now due - £25 or $50. Your early settlement would be much appreciated – please see the attached payment form.

Your continuing support of Keepers of the Green is gratefully acknowledged and we hope to see many members in St Andrews during 2013.

With kind regards

Janet Finlay
Hon Secretary
